Kokichi Mikimoto is definitely considered the father of modern pearls as the creator of beautiful Akoya pearl. Japanese Akoya pearls are only sold to factories, not directly to retailers. When the beads are sold to factories, they are polished, milled and drilled ready for printing. Since Akoya pearl farms do not sell pre-strung strands of pearls to retailers, Many factories that buy these beads mix the real Japanese Akoya pearls Akoya pearls in China. Chinese Akoya pearls are always high quality and most consumers would never know the difference. So beware of any dealer who told you that a pearl necklace is 100% Japanese Akoya because they are very difficult to find.
