A tribute to women artists

I f you are in New York and looking for ways to stay out of this oppressive summer heat, trying to catch the one woman show: Folk art by female hands on the point of view at the American Folk Museum of Art. About 60 objects from the museum's vast collection to illustrate the many mediums and a wide range of capabilities used by women of the 18th and 19th for artistic expression.

According to Stacy Hollander, the exhibition curator, "the artistic activities have been mainly the province of male artists and the work of women operated almost entirely in a separate circle that was admired by peers and found women and important figures such as teachers and parents. Quilts presented individuality, according to Hollander, and sometimes made political statements, not always subtle. You do not just look to museum exhibitions or at the 18th and 19th centuries to find evidence of Girls Gone Wild. The daughters of each decade have resisted evolution and followed their artistic passions. In some cases, the result of their work is long lost, but the proof process survives. This basket splint, located in upstate New York is filled with balls of cotton cloth and wool and signed in paint on the handle, "Ms. Millard SC." With a little digging in the genealogical records, discovered much about Anna Millard. She was born in 1860 in New York and became the wife of Lewis C. Millard. They made their home in Oneonta, Ostsego County at the turn of the century with two children, one who lived to maturity. In the years 1910, Anna and Lewis lived with his parents, owners of hotels in Oneonta. Both were dead Billion in 1930. By the second quarter of the 20th century women were using traditional methods to create art and to actively compete with men. Two Mexican silver designers Ana Nunez of brightening, and Bernice Goodspeed were at the top of their field in competition for Mexican customers with William Spratling icons and Castillo brothers.

Ana Nunez de brightening (marked her work Victoria) opened his studio in 1940 and operated until 1978. She designed this set of six shot glasses made of copper with sterling silver overlay figures and engraved with scenes of rural Mexico. Each glass features a different design and the interior is coated with silver thick. All are marked with "Victoria Taxco Mexico 267. "
