History …… Pear Harbor and the yellow peril?

Dsuss attitudes that many Americans held regardingthe Japanesebefore the attack on Pearl Harbor. What factors influeced opinions of Japanese Americans?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Japanese_sentiment scroll lower early 20th century anti-Japanese racism in California had become increasingly xenophobic after Japan's victory over Russia in the Russo-Japanese. On October 11, 1906, the San Francisco Board of Education had adopted a rule that children of Japanese descent would be required to attend racial segregation in separate schools. At the time, Japanese immigrants represented about 1% of the population of California; many of them came under the treaty in 1894 which had assured free immigration from Japan sharply. "Japanese Invasion China in 1931 and the annexation of Manchuria was criticized in the United States. In addition, efforts by citizens outraged by the atrocities panies, such as the rape of Nanking, led to calls for U.S. economic intervention encouraging Japan to leave China and these calls were played a role in shaping U.S. foreign policy. As more and more reports of adverse actions came to Japan the attention of the U.S. government, embargoes on oil and other supplies have been placed on Japan, for the sake of the Chinese population, and to U.S. interests in the Pacific. In addition, the European American population has become very pro-Chinese and anti-Japanese, an example being a campaign of grass-roots women to stop buying silk stockings, because the equipment was purchased from Japan through its colonies. Young China Club warning to American visitors against buying Japanese products to San Francisco Chinatown in 1940. When the Second Sino-Japanese war broke out In 1937, public opinion was decidedly pro-Western China, with eyewitness reports by Western journalists about the atrocities committed against Chinese civilians to further strengthen the anti-Japanese sentiment. African American feelings could be very different from the general public, with organizations like the Movement peaceful world of the East (PMEW) which promised equality and land distribution under Japanese rule. The PMEW had thousands of members hope prepare for the release of white supremacy with the arrival of the Japanese Imperial Army. This included weapons storage. "
