How do you know when tipping is appropriate?
Tipping is a great way to express my gratitude for good service. Some services where tips are appropriate are obvious, such as waiters, the shoeshine guy at the airport, a service of Parking, etc. .., but where does it end? The cashier at the grocery store to ring your articles, the guy that mixes paint for you to hardware, the grounds keeper of the hotel, the guy who holds the local public swimming pool clean? How do you determine if tipping is expected and / or appropriate? I know the pat answer is something like "a service where a significant amount of income should come from the servers tips. The real question is how do you know when it does?

These People work hard and pay a daily cost of doing their job above / beyond short trips. The cost of doing their work comes directly out of pocket and without tips, they might not be able to afford to do tomorrow. The only time it melts NOT tipping is whether the service is absolutely atrocious. Even the poor service in these professions deserve a nominal peak. And then there are times when you feel its appropriate to tip based solely on receiving great service. Although there are people who receive services at low wages and have a job to try, they are not usually a tip. This includes fast food workers, baristas and employment superstores. These are jobs that you are not expected to end, However, if you receive an excellent service, you may feel moved to .. and those people really would appreciate it. Did they help you quickly? Were polite? Were obviously inadequate, but you helped as quickly as they could, while remaining respectful? Was the right order? Did they make you laugh or smile? Did they know EXACTLY what you want and you walk it? Did they spend more time to help you find something? Have they help you choose something as a gift? Do you have to use their knowledge or experience with the product, store, service or price for help you make the best decision for you? Are they out of their way to help with a problem? Maybe they deserve a big thank you and extra couple of dollars to show his appreciation. What about people you can not switch? What happens when you call a 1-800 number line of your bank or Internet service or cable service? If they had been in front of you, would you want to graciously thank and give them a couple dollars? You can always tip these people, and that goes for the same thing every time you get really good service that made the day. Ask to talk to their supervisor and tell their boss how much you appreciate their extra work, knowledge and friendliness. Some companies have a price to give employees who receive a compliment for customers to reach a supervisor … And that makes their day. Another case is if you receive great service from the same person regularly … say the person receiving your dentist / doctors / chiropractors office? Are always friendly and helpful and greet you by name? Have you even FedEx or UPS person who is always gay-friendly? What is your email? These are people you do not feel well … tipping but you can maybe have a little gift for them … a treat, like a soda bottle upscale cookie or cake, chips or some candy or a meal voucher, a gift like a Christmas ornament or something. Not all the time but once-in-a while "Please do your job so I'm excited to see you "gift." But this is not planned or even custom … just a way to brighten the day for people who brighten yours even if they are paid the same amount whether they grimace or smile at their job.
