How do I know if my old silver jewelry is real sterling silver or just silver or plate?
I have several old pins and brooches. The most obvious are marked 925 but there are many that are not marked. None of them stick to magnets and all are heavy for their size. And as far as I can see, none of the metals has been trimmed to expose a possible secondary metal underneath. I have one room, however, appears to be tarnished in a small area, but do not break with my polishing cloth. It does not stick to a magnet is. How can I tell if they are the real thing -? In addition, the test, it will damage the jewelry especially if it's not real money? If not money, this metal could they use that does not stick to a magnet?
Hello! Only iron alloys iron stick to a magnet. The base metal in jewelry plated is usually a copper alloy containing various other metals such as tin and nickel. You can find a jeweler (or silver) and ask them to test your parts. One way is to scrape a small amount of metal from a discreet place in the room. So that s / he she can tell if the piece is plated. s Second, he / she 'll put a drop of nitric acid on scrapings say the purity of silver. Part which could be further tarnished plated rhodium, a metal that increases the brightness of money and provides a durable coating. The coating can be disappeared and left a place that stands out. In addition, it could be that the part is base metals, and silver plating is gone. The oxidized copper alloys (Black) easily, so the copper and bronze jewelry should be protected by special varnish. I hope this helps. Good luck!
